What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are tools for replacing missing teeth and giving you a smile makeover. An implant is a titanium screw called a post that is placed into your jawbone and then topped with a porcelain crown or used to hold dentures in place more securely. In the hands of a skilled dentist, implants can provide an elegant, functional alternative to missing natural teeth. If you want to learn more about implants and evaluate your treatment options, we’d be happy to provide a free consultation. The Implant Process
The specific steps involved in restoring a smile with dental implants may vary from one patient to the next. Due to the fact that each individual has different needs associated with restoring their smile, the process for fulfilling those needs is different as well. Most commonly, the process consists of:
During your free consultation, our doctors will examine the health of your gums and the density of your jawbone. Based on these assessments, we will determine if there is a need for preliminary treatment, such as bone grafting, before moving forward.
Upon approval, you will be scheduled for surgical implant placement. During this step, a titanium rod will be embedded into your jawbone. As the rod fuses with the bone, it will serve as an anchor for the full restoration.
Following the surgery, the healing process for your jaw will take between four and six months. There should be little or no discomfort during this recovery period.
An abutment will be connected to the titanium rod once the area of surrounding tissue has healed. This also provides time for the implant to fuse with the jawbone, creating a stable bond.
As the final step, you can expect to have your new smile completely restored! A custom-made crown will be built to fit the abutment, seamlessly joining the three components as one.
What are the Benefits of Dental Implants?
If you’re missing a tooth (or more than one), dental implants provide a terrific option. An implant topped with a crown will not only fill in the gap in your smile but can look and even function like an actual tooth. The results are not just impressive, but long-lasting. Implants themselves can last a lifetime with proper care, while the crowns on top can have a lifespan of over a decade. Implants can replace a single missing tooth, a whole mouthful, and for a more affordable option, be used to attach dentures more firmly to your mouth.
