What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is what happens when your gums become infected with bacteria. This is a common problem and can often occur with little to no physical discomfort. Usually, the first symptom that you’ll notice is bleeding while brushing.

When gum disease does occur, it is important to get treatment. Over time, gum disease can cause your gums to shrink or recede, exposing the roots of your teeth to decay and even causing your teeth to fall out. However, with proper dental care, gum disease can be prevented, treated and even healed.

What is Gum Disease Therapy?

If you have gum disease, we can treat it using a procedure called scaling and root planing. During this procedure, your dentist will gently clean the pockets that form when your gum line begins to detach from the base of your teeth, removing any bacteria that are living in the pockets and infecting your gums. We’ll also remove bacteria that are living on the surface of your roots, smoothing off plaque and tartar that have built up over time.

If performed regularly, this procedure can keep gum disease from progressing and may even cure it. We typically recommend that patients with gum disease schedule a scaling and root planing every three months.
